Welcome to Geiger Maps Jp

Welcome to Geiger Maps Jp, a portal for radiation maps and visualizations. The site is made up of three sections: (1) A curated list of radiation maps and visualizations, (2) Tutorials for setting up your own Geiger counter, and (3) Technical information to help people better understand radiation.

Radiation counts are gathered from a mix of data posted online by public agencies, individuals, and hobbyists. If you are collecting your own Geiger data, you can support the maps and visualizations listed on this site by uploading your data to the internet.

About

In the wake of the nuclear accident at TEPCO (Tokyo Electric Power COmpany) Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant and the Great Tohoku Earthquake on March 11th, 2011, media outlets were filled with information on the spread of radiation throughout Japan. Rumors quickly spread across social media sites, often filled with incorrect or misleading information, and added to public confusion.

The accident caused many people in Japan to question the safety of nuclear power and there has been a dramatic increase in number of people have taken a strong stance against it. Nevertheless, even if the hardest line was taken and there was a decision to decommission all nuclear power plants in Japan, it is expected that it would take over 10 years for the reactors to be completely shutdown.

As long as there are active reactors, there is a need for clear, accurate, and trustworthy information on radiation. We would like to propose this portal as an open place for people all over the world to objectively share that information.

Please become part of this community by adding your findings to the lists provided. Also help by volunteering towards making radiation information more open and understandable.
